Marching on Together

Leeds United is an amazing football club, but there are several other amazing clubs out there. What makes Leeds so special to me? To answer this question, we’ll have to travel back in time.

It was the winter of 2018. Our college’s sports festival was on the horizon. My friends and I were favourites to win the football event. Among these friends, a few were fans of cricket and wanted to participate in that event. We decided that we’ll play cricket together. We didn’t have 11 players for cricket, but we decided to go ahead with it anyway. We approached our friends and asked them to be part of our team. Our proposal statement was simple “The trophy’s coming home with us, are you?” We were ridiculed, and most said no to us. Our team was so bad on paper that a couple of our friends even decided to not be part of our “cricket” team. But we somehow completed our playing 11. And now that we were playing cricket, we decided to play volleyball and basketball as well(remaining team sports).

To be honest, every one of us knew that we weren’t going to win, we just wanted to have some fun. But no one showed this, because “The trophy’s coming home with us”.

By the end of the first day of the fest, In cricket we had defeated our friends who choose to play with “better” team, were in finals of basketball, volleyball, and football. Ours was a group of 15-20 players, and they were either participating or cheering and sledging.

Despite our motto being “The trophy’s coming home with us”, we had outdone our expectations. On day 2, we went on to win the cricket and volleyball and came second in basketball (losing final only by 2 points). Football final was rescheduled to a later date, we won that as well.

The victory in itself was special, but what was more special was a bunch of people playing for each other and punching above their weight. And this was not a unique incident, almost everything we did was spectacular. We were never meant to do these things, but we did them anyway.

This is what I see when I see Leeds play. A bunch of people playing for each other, never giving in and always punching above their weights. I see myself, I see my people.

With the start of this new year, I would like to show my gratitude to all of my people:

__

We’ve been through it all together,

And we’ve had our ups and downs

We’re gonna stay with you forever,

At least until the world stops going round
